Can you learn a language with an app? What the research says

Many learners join us having started learning German with an app, and it's great to see how many expressions, individual words, or even aspects of basic grammar concepts they have picked up this way! Apps and online learning definitely have their place in the modern learning world and they get better each year. They help us hone our listening, reading and, to an extent, even basic writing skills, and they add a lot of variety to our language learning.

But can you have a meaningful conversation with your app? Because ultimately, humans are innately social creatures and we are hard-wired to interact with one another. And all our learners share the same goal: they want to learn to be able to SPEAK freely and interact meaningfully with another human being, whilst having the confidence that their pronunciation is authentic and their choice of words is appropriate.
