Halfway Through the Year: Are You Where You Wanted to Be With Your German?

ree

Can you believe we’re already halfway through 2025?

June the perfect time to check in with yourself, not in a dramatic, New Year’s resolution kind of way, but just a gentle pause to reflect:

Am I where I wanted to be with my German by now?

I don't know about you, but I am a "list person". On my cork board next to my standing desk, I have my plans for 2025. Plans for Better German and plans for my private life, including travel destinations, of course! Visible to me every day so I can keep checking them throughout the year to see whether I am on track and not lose sight of my goals and go off-piste!

So maybe like me, back in January, you set some goals. Maybe you thought, “This year, I’ll finally sort out the grammar,” or “I want to feel more confident speaking at work.”

And maybe you’ve made amazing progress and have ticked off a few goals already.

Cool!

Or maybe life got busy, German moved to the back burner and you’re not quite sure where you are anymore.

Either way, it’s completely normal. I always think June is the best month to pause, rest, breathe and reset.

Ideally in the shade with a cold drink in your hand ;-)

Here’s a simple mid-year check-in:

  1. What’s working? Is there something you’ve really enjoyed, like listening to German podcasts on your walk or watching German Netflix with subtitles? Keep doing more of that. Learning doesn’t need to feel like hard work all the time.

  2. What’s not working? Be honest. Are you stuck doing the same grammar exercises and not actually using the language? Are you avoiding speaking because you don’t feel “ready”? This is your chance to notice what’s holding you back. And remember: what works for one person might not work for you. That's normal. Keep experimenting and trying out new ways to learn.

  3. What do you want the second half of the year to feel like? More structured? More fun? Less frustrating? You get to choose. A few tweaks now can make a huge difference later.

And if you’re thinking, “I’ve lost momentum completely”…

That’s okay. You don’t need to “catch up” or start over.

You just need a fresh starting point and a system that actually supports you.

That’s exactly why I created the Better German Community Hive. It’s designed for busy people who want to make real progress without pressure, without shame and without wasting hours searching for answers randomly online.

Inside the Hive, you can:

  • Learn clear grammar explanations and real-life phrases in short videos

  • Practise what you’ve learned with tasks that fit your life

  • Apply your skills in speaking, writing and real-world situations

  • And get actual support from a human - you can ask me your questions directly in your lessons or in our Q&A forum

So if your answer to “Am I where I wanted to be?” is anything close to “not quite”…

Let’s make the second half of the year different. Not by doing more, but by doing the right things consistently and with support.

Give your German a fresh start this summer.

Your December self will be glad you did.
